GMRC Layout
The basement area utilized for the layout was previously used as a music room, during the time this building housed a Gilbert school; and more recently as the Gilbert Historical Museum Thrift Store.
While significant demolition and rebuilding were required, the final design allows public viewing with automated operation and sufficient room for club members to participate in full rail operating sessions.
The final layout design includes two levels including a portion of the Santa Fe from Phoenix to Globe as well as the Southern Pacific supporting Phoenix and the surrounding area. General Information Overall construction of the layout utilizes pre-fabricated modules built on 8 foot lengths to provide flexibility of design.
In order to move between levels, two helixes have been built into the layout.
At this time, track has been laid for most of the lower level except for the section from Phoenix Union station to the Salt River bridge. The following diagrams show how the overall layout will look when complete.
